The endocannabinoid system and sleep:

Researchers have discovered that the endocannabinoid system plays a role in maintaining certain body functions, such as mood, appetite, sleep and the regulation of circadian rhythms. The endocannabinoid system includes a network of cannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system. The main two receptors are called CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Cannabinoids tie to these cells and have various effects. In regards to how they may affect sleep, some research indicates that CBD may interact with specific receptors, potentially affecting the sleeping cycle.

On top of that, CBD can also decrease anxiety and pain, both of which can interfere with a restful sleep. By reducing some symptoms, sleep may also get better.

What does research on CBD say?

Although further studies are needed, some research suggest that CBD and cannabinoids may improve sleep. The study, published in the journal Medicines, studied 409 people suffering from insomnia. The data were collected from June 2016 to May 2018. Participants rated their insomnia symptoms on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most severe. The initial symptoms were estimated at 6.6 on average.

Participants were treated with cannabis flowers using different methods of use, including vaporizers, pipe and joint. The potency of THC was 20% on average and limited to 30%. The potency of THC was 5.7% on average and limited to 30%. After using cannabis, participants rated the symptoms at an average of 2.2, a decrease of 4.5.

The results indicated that cannabis cannabinoids lowered the symptoms of insomnia. However the study focused on the use of the cannabis flower, which contains several cannabinoids. It is difficult to determine whether the relief from insomnia was due solely to CBD or another cannabinoid.

In another study published in the journal Permanente, 72 adults suffering from anxiety and sleeping disorders were involved. Participants conducted anxiety and sleep assessments at the beginning of the study and during the first month of follow-up. Study participants received 25 mg of CBD in capsule form. Those with mainly sleep disorders took the dose in the evening. Participants whose main complaint was anxiety took CBD in the morning.

After the first month, anxiety scores decreased in 79% of the people. Sleep scores improved for 66% of the participants, indicating a decrease in sleep disorders. The results suggest that CBD decreased sleep disorders in many participants. However, while the decrease in anxiety symptoms remained stable throughout the study, sleep scores fluctuated over time.

Although there are many studies showing that CBD and cannabinoids can improve sleep, the results are inconclusive and further research needs to be done.
